The 6-Point Website Security Check Every Ghanaian Business Should Run This Month

September is Ghana's National Cyber Security Awareness Month, and this year's theme is building trust in our digital finance ecosystem. Most of the conversation is about banks and mobile money. But every business that takes payments or enquiries online is part of that ecosystem too, and for most SMEs the front door is the website.

At DeMario Glow, we run the same six checks on every website we build or take over. They take minutes, and they prevent most of the problems we get called in to fix.

    1. HTTPS on every page

Your site should show the padlock on every page, not just the payment page. Browsers now warn visitors away from insecure pages, and that warning costs you customers before they even read your offer.

    2. Two-factor authentication on admin logins

Passwords get reused and leaked. Turning on 2FA for your website, hosting and domain accounts is the single cheapest security upgrade you can make.

    3. Updates in the last 30 days

Outdated plugins, themes and frameworks are one of the most common ways attackers get in. If nobody on your team owns updates, that is the real problem to fix.

    4. Protection on every form

Contact and quote forms attract bots. Spam protection keeps your inbox clean and stops your form from being abused to send junk in your name.

    5. A backup you've actually restored

A backup you have never tested is only a hope. Schedule automatic backups and restore one to a test copy at least once a quarter.

    6. Domain and hosting on auto-renew

An expired domain can take your whole business offline overnight. It can also be parked or bought by someone else. Put renewals on auto-renew with a card that won't expire, and set a calendar reminder a month ahead anyway.

    How did you score?

If you ticked fewer than four, start with 2FA and auto-renew today. Both take less than ten minutes.

If you'd like a second pair of eyes, DeMario Glow reviews, secures and rebuilds websites for businesses in Ghana and worldwide. Send us a message and we'll tell you where you stand.
