An intelligent grooming network for Africa — built as a digital organism that finds the barber, previews the cut, books it, takes payment, and keeps clients coming back, all on its own.
TrimAura's founder, Joseph Arthur, arrived with a conviction rather than a spec. Barbering — one of the most repeated, most loyal services in any economy — was almost entirely unorganised. Discovery happened by word of mouth, booking by phone or by queue, and the quality of a cut was a gamble until you were already in the chair.
The brief was never "a booking app." It was a network that had to:
Find the right barber by proximity and proven, review-weighted rating.
Close the oldest gap in the trade — the distance between the cut a client pictures and the cut they actually get.
Run booking, scheduling, payments, payouts and reputation for a fleet of independent barbers from a single operator's console.
Be discoverable from day one, so it would not die quietly the way earlier barber apps had.
Launch in Accra, then be ready to scale across the continent without being rebuilt.
We shipped a production marketplace, not a prototype — a living system that gets smarter the more it is used. Every part was designed, engineered and deployed end to end by a single senior full-stack engineer.
Proximity-and-rating discovery — clients find barbers on map and list, ranked by a blend of closeness and a fair, review-weighted rating, so quality rises to the top of the network by design.
Virtual Style Studio (AI try-on) — a client uploads a photo, picks a style, and sees the cut on their own face. That preview becomes the exact brief sent to the barber — the miscommunication that defines the trade, engineered away.
AI Style Concierge — reads face shape, hair type and history to recommend the next style, and carries the saved brief into the booking, so the barber knows what is wanted before the client arrives.
Verified Craft — before-and-after results are assessed for execution, building each barber a verified, trustworthy craft profile: the continent's first credible signal of who can truly deliver a given cut.
Smart Grooming Engine — personalised product recommendations from hair type and history; genuine grooming intelligence for the client and a new revenue line for the network.
Full marketplace operations — booking, scheduling and reservations, multi-rail payments across mobile money and card, automated payouts, ratings, rewards and referrals, plus an operator command centre that runs the whole network from one screen.
Engineered mobile-first and server-light, the platform was built and put into production in weeks, not quarters — production-grade, fast, and lean enough to run on a young startup's footing while it grows.

I came with an idea and DeMario came back with a working business. People find a barber, see their cut before they sit down, book and pay — and it just runs. It feels like a company, not a project.
